| Even
when it's a hot summer, did you know that there is a pile of snow in the
Longmont Dairy ice room?
After
the glass bottles are washed, they are filled with cold, fresh milk. At
the end of the milk filling carousel, another machine puts the cap on
the top
Next, the bottles of milk are boxed and
rolled into a big room that is refrigerated. What a cool job! The workers
in that room actually get cold in the middle of summer!
At
about 11 p.m., the milk truck drivers start to fill up their trucks. They
roll the boxes (or cases) of milk into the back of the milk truck. Next
they cover the top of the inside of the truck with shaved ice. They shovel
it in, just like shoveling snow. They make sure that all of the nooks
and crannies between the milk bottles are filled with snow, until the
entire back part of the milk truck is filled to the top. The milk has
to stay cold, at about 44 degrees, to keep it tasting fresh, all the way
to your house.
Brrrr!
The thought of shoveling snow in the summer just made me cold! Time for
a cup of hot chocolate!
