Did you know that the big cows eat
about 85 to 90 pounds of feed every day? That’s about as much as a 6th
grader weighs. When I’m all grown up, I’ll weigh about 1500 pounds.
Just imagine about fifteen 7th graders standing on the scales
and that will be the future me.
Here
at Longmont Dairy Farm, the milkers milk the cows all day long and all
night long. Each cow gets milked three times a day. The milk cows hear
the farm worker rattle the chains when he is opening up the gate to the
pen. They know that sound means that it’s milking time, so they all stand
up to go. The cows know how to get to the barn so they all walk, with
the farm worker gently talking to them from behind. It only takes one
farm worker to bring 90 cows to the barn or milking parlor.
